Reconceptualizing feeding and feeding disorders in interpersonal context: The case for a relational disorder.

The feeding of young children is fundamentally a relational and multisystemic process. Successful treatment of clinically significant feeding problems involves careful assessment of the full range of influences on the feeding relationship and integrated treatment approaches. However, current diagnostic approaches to feeding disorders tend to be reductionistic, exclusively focused on the child as an individual, and overly concerned with exclusionary criteria. Criteria are proposed for "Feeding Disorder Between Parent and Child" that address these limitations and embrace the complexity of feeding problems. A multiaxial diagnosis that describes the child (including medical, developmental, and behavioral characteristics); the parent; the parent-child relationship; and the social and nutritional context of feeding will more accurately speak to treatment planning in this population. The proposed diagnostic criteria were developed and refined on the basis of the available literature and many years of treatment experience across the authors of this article. The proposed diagnosis will support the development and evaluation of treatment packages with components specifically targeted to issues of the child, parent, parent-child interaction, and the broader environment. Evaluation of pavement surface texture significance and measurement techniques

It is generally agreed that the skid resistance of a pavement is controlled by the surface texture characteristics. Therefore, by measuring the relevant parameters describing texture, or by measuring a physical process dependent on texture, regression techniques can be used to relate skid resistance to the chosen texture parameter or process. Two scales of texture are of particular importance: microtexture (small-scale asperities) and macrotexture (largescale asperities).In this paper work performed at the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute at the Pennsylvania State University is described and is given in two parts: (1) a review of candidate macrotexture and microtexture measurement methods that can be made at highway speeds (at or above 65 km h^?1), which are presently used or have potential for use in pavement texture research, with a recommendation of the more promising methods for further development, and (2) a summary of the effects of pavement surface texture on skid resistance.     

Sol Garfield, have you not heard about family psychotherapy?

Responds to S. Garfield's (see record 1981-33210-001) article appraising the progress and claims of psychotherapy over the last 40 yrs. It is argued that Garfield failed to mention the impact and existence of the psychotherapeutic modality of family therapy and that his focus on the progress and claims of psychotherapy is thus incomplete. Garfield's exclusion of family therapy is seen as characteristic of the current interface between individual psychology and family theory. It is argued that it is possible to integrate individual psychology with systems theory and associated therapies and that such an integration and progression to systems thinking is a logical and necessary step in the development of psychotherapy. Digitalrechenprogramm zur Bestimmung von Temperaturen in Rollen und Walzen

Das Digitalrechenprogramm “WINST” zur Berechnung der Temperaturbewegungen in Rollen und Walzen, die mit Stahlsträngen oder Walzgut in Berührung stehen. Bestimmung der Unterschiede zwischen der gröβten und kleinsten Temperatur von Punkten der Oberfläche sowie solchen innerhalb einer Rolle oder Walze während einzelner Umdrehungen. Ermittlung der gröβten, während der Abläufe der Gieβ- oder Walzvorgänge erreichten Oberflächentemperaturen. Vergleich der Rechenergebnisse mit Meβwerten.     

Glandular Trichome Extracts from Medicago sativa Deter Settling by the Potato Leafhopper Empoasca fabae

Extracts of glandular trichomes from Medicago sativa were tested for their ability to disrupt the settling behavior of the potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae. Erect and procumbent glandular trichomes were mechanically isolated from stem sections of resistant genotype "G98A," and nonglandular trichomes were collected from susceptible cultivar "Ranger." Isolated trichomes were extracted with chloroform, acetone, and ethanol, and the resulting crude extracts were applied to the surface of a sachet containing an artificial diet. Leafhoppers were offered a two-way choice between crude trichome extracts from G98A and Ranger. All three of G98A solvent extracts caused various degrees of diet rejection, resulting in the crude Ranger trichome extracts being preferred over G98A extracts. Overall, the fewest leafhoppers settled on the ethanolic extracts. Additional bioassays documented a dose response associated with G98A ethanolic extracts when compared with Ranger trichome extracts and a solvent control. No difference in preference behavior was detected between Ranger trichome extracts and a solvent control. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed a homologous series of nonvolatile fatty acid amides C(n)H(2n+1)NO (n = 19-23) unique to G98A glandular trichome extracts.     

A hybrid,finite element—finite difference approach to simplified large deflection analysis of structures

A new and considerably simplified solution technique for geometrically nonlinear problems is introduced. In contrast to the existing numerical methods, the present approach obtains an approximate large deflection pattern from the linear displacement vector by successively employing updated correction factors. Conservation of energy principle yields a general expression for these subsequent corrections. While the linear portion of the strain energy can be computed using finite element approach, evaluations of its nonlinear counterparts often require mathematical discretization techniques. The simple, self-correcting iterative procedure is unconditionally stable and its fast oscillatory convergence offers further computational efficiency. To illustrate the application of the proposed method and to assess its accuracy, moderately large deflections of beam, plate and flexible cable structures have been computed and compared with known analytical solutions. If required, the obtained results—which are acceptable for most design purposes—can be further improved.
